Decade on track : 2010 has landed

Tags: ,

twentyten

Set the memory back to when the world was “partying like its 99,” in 1999.  Did you have words on your tongue like Terrorist, iPhone, Global Warming, Facebook, Recession, Tweet, Bin Laden, App, Skype, Idol, YouTube, Obama, Google, Bluetooth…..?

However an individual decides to pronounce the new decade, a notable milestone has been reached by landing on 2010.  The conclusion of the first ten years creates a time to reflect, adjust, and execute an innovative approach to the pending adolescent years of the 21st Century. As an infant, our little Millennium provided many memorable moments for the baby book, but they were not always positive pictures.

Significant natural disasters, innovative terrorism, important political shifts, the gossip revolution, sporting brilliance, modern technology impacts, and the financial crisis kept the headlines at extreme levels over the Noughties. One could suggest that some of these themes are predicted to dramatise further, but there is also a sense of real enthusiasm surrounding the drop of the new decade.

Mother Nature is already ensuring we continue to keep climate change high on the agenda with concerning weather conditions globally. But there is importantly a theme of opportunity and a new confidence within conversations. The global community will work closer together than ever before to improve the financial markets, advance technology, help developing countries, create, bring change, entertain, and communicate.

The Conceptual Traders look forward to keeping on top of Twenty Ten and reflecting what is keeping people motivated and engaged throughout these times. The world is getting smaller and bigger simultaneously and it’s an exciting trend to observe.

To kick off the year we asked our readers to look back at the music that made them move most over the past ten years. Music is the true global connector and the festive season only makes this claim more apparent. The task is a considerable one as making a top ten list for 2009 would be difficult enough! As with a 1999 mindset comparable to now, a music taste also shapes and develops against many influences it faces on a ten year stretch. But what tunes stood the test of time and captured you over any other???

We encourage you to do the exercise and correlate a top ten list like some of our traders have already provided below. It brings a great sense of nostalgia as you run through the soundtrack of your last ten clicks.

All the best for 2010!

*Note mini videos are simply there for a soundtrack, click on the screen if you want to go through to YouTube and see it properly.

Songs of the decade

Name: DM / Status: Trading places

Outkast / “Mrs Jackson” (2000) - You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing this track in the first year of the millennium. This, and “B.O.B” (Bombs over Baghdad) rocked the world and made Outkast.

Phoenix / “If I Ever Feel Better” (2000) - As soon as I heard the song “Too Young” on movie Shallow Hal, I searched the soundtrack to find out who these guys were. The band was Phoenix and the album United also produced “If I ever feel better” which had me hooked. The boys have had a huge end of the decade with “1901” and “Listomaniza” taking over the airwaves from their latest and greatest album Wolfgang Amadeus.

One more time / Daft Punk (2000) - one more time, you know I’m just feelin’ celebration, tonight, celebrate, don’t wait, too late, we don’t stop, you can’t stop, we’re gonna celebrate, one more time, one more time, one more time, a celebration, you know we’re gonna do it right, tonight…..Do i need to say more??  Years from now when people look back at this decade and ask about the dance music, first stop will have to be Daft Punk. Although definitely exciting eardrums during the 90′s with Homework released in 1997, it was really in this decade that the French duo wearing helmets became legends with album Discovery. Check out live album Alive also if you need more proof!

Dr. Dre [ft. Eminem] / “Forgot About Dre” (2000) - From the highly successful album 2001 that featured numerous collaborators, including Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Nate Dogg and Eminem. The album charted at number two on the Billboard 200 charts and has since been certified six times platinum.

System of a Down – “Toxicity” (2001)

DJ Marky & XRS feat MC Stamina / “LK” (2002) - Ever since Marky was discovered by Bryan Gee in 1998 while touring through Sao Paulo, he has energised dance floors around the world. Chart success followed in 2002, with this track hitting the British charts as part of the full-fledged drum’n'bass revival seen in the first half of the decade. His hard but soulful and funky Brazilian sound mixed in with scratching and MC Stamina alongside is a must see.

DJ Pied Piper & The Masters Of Ceremonies - Do You Really Like It? (2002) – UK Garage!

Blackbird – East Coast Toast (2003)

High Contrast / “Racing Green” (2004) – Outstanding producer and an even better remixer of tracks. Wanted to pick an original over his remixes however remakes in 2009 of Adel – “Hometown Glory” and Calvin Harris – “Ready for the Weekend” are my highlights by this artist.

Bloc Party / “Like Eating Glass” (2005) - Their skill to build up a song up from a simple platform to a full epic sound is what has always grabbed me with Bloc Party. Trying to choose between Modern Love and Banquet for this list shows the stature of the album Silent Alarm. A Weekend in the City and Intimacy are both incredible listens to back up that album, a great find for the decade!

Freeform Five / “No More Conversations” (Mylo Remix) (2006) – Mylo doesn’t need an explanation, his album Destroy RocknRoll changed lives.

The Rapture / “Don Gon Do it: (2006) - Pieces of the People we Love is truly a fantastic album and a standout in 2006., “Got to get myself in to it” was the killer hook.

Shapeshifter / “One” (2006) - Ever since I heard Tapestry in 2001, there has not been a Shapey’s tour or gig in my city of residence that I haven’t attended. “One” recorded with the Symphony Orchestra on the Live album was enough to bring tears.

The National – “Mistaken for Strangers” (2007)

LCD Soundsystem – “Someone Great” (2007) - Obviously had to beat “All My Friends” but gets me like no other track. This group will be on my pod till I die.

M.I.A. / “Paper Planes” (2008) – The coolest Sri Lankan female on the planet delivers a chart stopper.

Chase and Status feat Kano / “Against all odds”  (2008) – Brilliant tracks

Miike Snow / Cult logic (2009) -  epic album!

Pearl Jam / “The Fixer” (2009) – Arguably left their best for last, the rock legends took 2009 by the balls and sold out every stadium they booked worldwide.

The Juan Mclean / “Happy House” (2009) - Cellar stage at R&V with sun setting!

But how could I miss:

Passion Pit / “Sleepyhead” (2009) – The Killers /”Mr Brightside” (2003) – Groove Armada / “Easy” - DJ Zinc / “SKA” (2003) –  Ian Brown / “F.E.A.R” (2001) – Hot Chip / “Boy From School” (2006) – Modest Mouse / “Float On”  (2004) – The Streets – “Blinded by the Lights” (2004)  Röyksopp / “What Else Is There?” (2006) * M.O.P / “Ante Up” (2000)  - Santogold / “L.E.S. Artistes” (2008)

Name: Tommy B / Status: “The streets actually did make me feel famous”

LCD Soundsystem – All my friends

An epic building anthem that sums up the late night hedonism of my first few years in Sydney.

M.I.A – Paper Planes
A genre defying, game changing track, that still makes me sing. Produced by none other than Diplo. Was a massive Indie hit, before it went mainstream via Slumdog.

Mylo – Drop the pressure
The signature track to his first album, on repeat for about 12 months on every dance floor. Club music doesn’t get any better than this.

Justice v Simian – We are your friends
The first track to really define the blog-house scene. Indie & Electro were now friends and skinny jeaned and fluro fags united on the d-floor!

The Strokes – last night
The best band of the decade. Hands down. The uber cool, rich kids from New York delivered two great albums. This was the track that got me into them and is equally poppy as it is cool.

Jay Z – Empire state of mind
The soundtrack to my recent New York trip. Using the word ‘Inspiring’ is definitely not quite doing the song justice, but I get goose-bumps every time I here the first beat.

Hot Chip – Over and over
Another blog-house favourite. Equally as good at 8am on the way to work, or 8am, when errr, not on the way to work…

M.A.N.D.Y & Bookashade – Body language
The score to my time in Barcelona, it is then without saying that a lot of that time was spent in clubs.

The Knife – Heartbeats
Another epic track, that Jose Gonzales covered to make it big. As equally haunting as it is brilliant. The Rex the Dog Mix is probably just as good.

The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army
The most recognisable opening to a song, pretty much owned me anytime it came on in the last seven years.

Honourable mentions:
- TV on the radio – Staring at the sun
- Daft punk – Alive 2007 – Track 10 Mash Up
- Santogold – Les Artistes

- Arcade fire – Wake Up
- The Roots – The Seed
- The Killers – Mr Brightside – Thin White Duke Remix
- Bloc Party – Banquet
- Gossip – Standing in the way of Control
- Friendly Fires – Paris
- The Libertines – Can’t stand me now
- The Knife – Heartbeats
- CSS – Lets Make love and listen to death from above
- Cut Copy – Hearts on Fire

Name: Dec-ade Stubbing / Status: UKrave

1. Bloc Party – Helicopter (2005)
Epic vocal. Huge drums. Safe.

2. Killers – Mr Brightside (2004)
Anthem. Dont know anyone who cant scream all the lyrics to this (Jacques Lu Cont’s Think White Duke Mix; huge).

3. The Strokes – Last Nite (2001)
Whole album is awesome but this track is the epitome of cool.

4. Kings Of Leon – King of The Rodeo (2004)
Loved this track hard when i first heard it on bFM top 10. Seeing them at the BDO in 06 sealed the deal.

5. LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends (2007)
Uncomfortably euphoric piano riff, slick percussion and James Murphy whining about growing old. Love it.

6. MGMT – Kids (2008)
Stuck on thrash rotate all round the world. Spawned all sorts of epic remixes. Great Synth. Live version didn’t really live up to the hype but still awesome.

7. Mylo – Drop the Pressure (2004)
Massive, for ages. Couldn’t go anywhere without hearing it at least once.

8. Phoenix – Lisztomaina (2009)
Catchy as fuck. Great live.

9. Amy Winehouse – Rehab (2007)
Her and Mark Ronson reinvented and repackaged soul music without ripping it off. Shame she went crazy.

10. Q – Tip – Gettin Up (2008)
Sick samples, jazzy drums and unmistakeable Tribe like rhymes.

10=. Shapeshifter – One (2006)
Soulful as. Could have picked anything off this album. Has awesome NZ summer nights written all over it.

10=. De La Soul – All Good (2000)
Sick track, still crank it. Love the Chaka Khan hook.

10=. Radiohead – Bodysnatchers (2007)
Stoked to see them thrash some dirty guitar again.

10=. The White Stripes – 7 Nation Army (2003)
Massive, cant have a top ten without this.
———————————————————————————————–

Name: MASTER MOUSE PATROL Status: SEXY as fark, YET extremely POLITE

15 Step – Radiohead. From their album In Rainbows. When I first heard this song it confirmed that Radiohead were modern music gods.

Earth Intruders – Bjork. From her album Volta. Necessary Voodoo. Impressive video clip too.

Gamma Ray – Beck. From his album Modern Guilt. Proved he still had his unique swagger all these years and albums on.

Mademoiselle K – Ca Me Vexe. From her album Ca Me Vexe. Even though its in French so I don’t know what’s being said, this is one of the best rock songs I’ve ever heard.

Carla Bruni – Quelqu’un m’a dit. From her debut album Quelqu’un m’a dit. Because its a sexy song, and she’s sexy. And I wanna be Sarkozy.

Lead Balloon – Liam Finn. Because when he first toured promoting I’ll Be Lightning and sung this with Jimmy Barnes in Sydney it was nothing short of fuckin phenomenal.

Trinity Roots – any one of their songs. Maybe Egos from True. This music is New Zealand.
